I am a Dutch-born artist based in West Orange, New Jersey, 20
miles from New York City.
In my work I abstractly explore the relationship between the surface of the earth, waterways and coastlines, and the trails created by people, animals, birds and insects who use these lines as travel routes. I am intrigued by how these interactions impact the traveler's path and identity.
I
create textured two and three dimensional mapscapes with gesso, sand
and paint, metal, glass and wood, as well as various objects. The pieces abstractly tell the story of a person, or a group of
people, or an archetype. I call this series "The Scenic Route".
I have developed a language of visual elements I associate
with life’s journeys. Graphically, these elements evoke maps, geography
and transportation. Symbolically, they relate to our psyche, milestones
and lessons learned along the way.
As we travel, we come across opportunities, establish milestones, and
collect the gems of lessons learned, which add to our particular
journey and give it character. We influence others along their path.
Split-second decisions send us scattering left or right, determining
all future direction. We move like so many before us, yet each journey
is unique.
I studied art at Atelier Hourdé and Ecole Camondo in Paris, at
the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC (BFA) and at the Art
Students League in New York. I have had solo and group shows in New
York City, New Jersey, Arizona and Germany. I recently co-organized a 2-day arts event in
the Valley Arts District in Orange/West Orange, NJ.
